Dr Lewis Levitz MBBCh, MMed, FCS(SA) Ophth, FRCSEd, FRANZCO

Dr Lewis Levitz specialises in cataract, oculoplastic and general ophthalmology. He is an experienced cataract surgeon and uses the latest in intraocular lens technology.

He has a special interest in eyelid surgery and enjoys correcting eyelid malpositions as well as repairing or reconstructing lids following eyelid tumour removal. He also practices all aspects of general ophthalmology. 

Dr Levitz practices from the Vision Eye Institute Coburg, Camberwell and Blackburn South.

Background

Dr Levitz trained at the University of the Witwatersrand, graduating in 1992.  He then completed his ophthalmology training in South Africa, becoming a Fellow of the College of Medicine of South Africa in 1999 and then a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 2000.

Dr Levitz completed a fellowship in oculoplastic surgery at the University Hospital of Wales in the UK in 2005.  He is also a founder member of the South African Oculoplastic Society. He became a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists in 2009.

Professional Credentials

Dr Levitz has been awarded the prestigious Muthusamy medal for outstanding achievement, awarded by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, for the years 1999/2000. He has also received the following Awards:

• Elie Dahan Ophthalmic Surgical Prize for Registrar of the year award in 1999.
• Stortz (Bausch and Lomb) Achievement award. 
• Tetje Patterson Bequest for Ophthalmic Research 1998
• Helen Keller Poster award ISOT Rome 2006

Dr Levitz has published letters and articles in five Index Medicus Journals including the British Journal of Ophthalmology, the Journal of the American Association of Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus, the South African Medical Journal, Ophthalmic Surgery Laser and Imaging Journal and the Journal of Clinical & Experimental Ophthalmology.

He has presented papers and posters at 10 international congresses which included topics ranging from trauma to orbital implants. His poster on hydroxyapatite implants won the Helen Keller Foundation award at the International Society of Ocular Trauma in Rome in 2006. This later led to a Masters thesis on the topic of orbital implants being awarded in 2007. 

Beyond Work

Dr Levitz is a passionate bird watcher and enjoys spending time travelling with his family.
