Dr Doug Roydhouse specialises in cataract surgery and medical retina. His current services include general ophthalmology, cataract surgery, laser treatment for diabetes and other vascular problems, macular degeneration and laser for glaucoma. He practices at Vision Eye Institute, Footscray.
He was educated at Geelong College where he was the school Dux in 1965. He studied medicine at Melbourne University where he graduated with Honours in surgery in 1972. Dr Roydhouse undertook an ophthalmology registrar position at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital in 1977 and completed a retinal fellowship in 1981. He has worked as a senior consultant ophthalmologist at the RVEEH for 17 years and was a founding member of the Melbourne Excimer Laser Group.
Dr Roydhouse has co-authored academic papers on Vitrectomy techniques and Giant Pigment Epithelial Tear. He has presented papers at local and international conferences.
Dr Roydhouse has many interests outside of his busy work schedule, including a passion for good food and wine (he has participated at a week-long cooking school in Perigourd, Frances). He loves playing music (including bass, rhythm and lead guitar) and brass instruments (including the trombone). He also enjoys fly fishing, and spending time with his children and families (including 5 grandchildren).
