Dr Devinder Chauhan is a retinal and macular specialist, with experience in the medical, laser, injection and surgical treatment of retinal disease. Surgically, he has rapidly and consistently embraced the finest instruments and regularly performs complex operations, often combined with modern premium cataract surgery.
His primary consulting practice is in Box Hill and he visits clinics in Footscray and Wonthaggi on a fortnightly basis.
Dr Devinder Chauhan was born and educated in west London. He studied Medicine at Guy’s Hospital Medical School (University of London) and qualified as a doctor in 1989. After working as a junior neurosurgeon and cardiothoracic surgeon, he underwent most of his junior training in ophthalmology at St Thomas’ Hospital. Here, he was inspired to become a vitreoretinal surgeon by Mr Tony Chignell, one of the doyens of international retinal surgery.
Devinder conducted original research at St. Thomas’, under the supervision of Professor John Marshall, into the interpretation of Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) images of the retina; this was the first OCT machine in Europe. Devinder presented this research in the UK, France, Switzerland, the USA and Australia and published the results in the highest-ranking journals. He was awarded an MD for his thesis by the University of London in 2001.
His senior ophthalmology training was at Moorfields Eye Hospital where he was trained by internationally renowned subspecialist ophthalmologists. After completing his registrar training in ophthalmology, Devinder underwent three further years of retinal training, with a year each at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear, Bristol Eye and Moorfields Eye Hospitals, before working as a consultant in vitreoretinal surgery at the Birmingham and Midland Eye Centre in Birmingham, UK.
He was actively recruited from the UK by Vision Group, Australia’s largest provider of private eye care, and is now one of the doctor partners of the company.
Dr Chauhan is an active member of the Oceania Retinal Association and continues his professional development through regularly attending and presenting at meetings in Australia and overseas. As well as enjoying teaching optometrists, junior doctors and orthoptists, he feels that a vital part of his work is engaging patients and helping them understand their conditions fully, which was the vision behind the development of his website, www.retinadoctor.com.au.
He is currently in the process of setting up clinical research studies using leading edge technologies to treat macular diseases such as age-related macular degeneration, diabetes and retinal vein occlusions.
Dr Chauhan attends weekly retinal meetings at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital and is involved in research both in his consulting rooms and at the Centre for Eye Research Australia, collaborating with senior researchers there as well as the Australian medical technology industry.
Dr Chauhan his wife and their three school-aged children migrated permanently to Melbourne in 2006 and became Australian citizens in 2010. He enjoys gardening and plays hockey in his spare time.
