Dr Bourke specialises in treatment of macula, vitreo-retina and cataract. His special interest is in the treatment of age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
In addition to injection therapy for macular conditions, his surgical skill set encompasses surgery and laser treatment of cataract, vitreo-retinal and macular conditions, including AMD, diabetic retinopathy, macular hole, epiretinal membrane, and retinal detachment.
Also, due to extensive sub-speciality training, Dr Bourke is one of the few ophthalmologists who can manage all complexities of cataract, macular, vitreo-retinal surgery. Whether complex or routine, primary or tertiary referrals, patients benefit from the multiple skill sets and his wealth of experience.

After completing his Ophthalmology training (1987-91 Brisbane), Dr Bourke furthered his experience by completing two vitreo-macular fellowships at Moorfields Eye Hospital (London) and St Pauls (Liverpool, UK) between 1991-95. During this time, Dr Bourke treated the UK’s most complex cases and this proved invaluable experience in the management and minimisation of complications in routine intraocular surgery.
Dr Bourke’s additional skill sets, and his continued dedication to technical advancement, has made him an invaluable community resource for the people of the Gold Coast, as well as referrers throughout the Australiasian region, Europe and the USA, since 1995.
He was a co-founder of The Eye Centre, now Vision Eye Institute, as well as Short Street Day Surgery in 1998. He is Associate professor at Bond University on the Gold Coast and Director and Founder of Vision Retinal Institute.
Dr Bourke has authored 20 peer-reviewed journal articles and has been a guest lecturer at international symposia on macular degeneration treatment, diabetes, macular hole surgery, together with complex cataract and intraocular lens surgery. He is a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists and a member of Retinal and Cataract associations in the USA, UK and Europe (ASRS, ANZRS, AUSCRS, ASCRS, Euretina and EVRS).
Dr Bourke is married, with four children and enjoys tennis, golf and playing blues/jazz guitar and piano.
