Dr Peter Heiner is one of Australia’s most significant eye specialists and a pioneer in micro-incision surgery. Currently, he provides his considerable expertise in the areas of cataract and refractive laser surgery.
Dr Heiner provides his specialist services at Vision Eye Institute at Southport and Coolangatta.
Dr Heiner was born in Brisbane and attended medical school at the University of Queensland. He did his residency (and Ophthalmology Specialist Training) in Brisbane metropolitan hospitals. He was one of the earliest doctors in Australia to perform laser refractive surgery, as well as pioneering micro-incision cataract surgery. He is founding partner of The Eye Centre, as well as a founding partner of the Excimer Laser Centre.
Dr Heiner has a number of appointments, including as a Fellowship of the RANZCO, Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of Surgeons, Founding member of the Australian Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons, Associate Professor and Trustee of Bond University Medical School, Member of the Australian Medical Association (AMA), International Member of the American Society of Cataract & Refractive Surgeons (ASCRS), International Member of the American Academy of Ophthalmologists (AAO).
He was the first doctor in the country to perform coaxial micro-incision cataract surgery (CMICS), and has lectured throughout Austalia and Asia on micro-incision surgery.
In Queensland, he is well known for his monthly talkback show on 4CRBC Community Radio speaking about eye diseases, which has been on air since 2001.
Dr Heiner loves sports, and particularly enjoys mountain bike riding, surfing and snow skiing.
