Dr David Ng is a specialist cataract surgeon. He is also a general ophthalmologist with a special interest in diabetic eye disease and glaucoma. He practices at Vision Eye Institute, Chatswood, Cremorne and Drummoyne.
Dr Ng went to school at Trinity Grammar School, where he was awarded the Bishop Chambers Scholarship. He then studied medicine at the University of Sydney. He completed a Master’s of Public Health (his treatise for Master’s of Public Health was titled “Stop it or you will go blind”, which was a literature review regarding the effects of smoking on eye health). Dr Ng gained a wide breadth of clinical expertise in neurosurgery and plastic surgery prior to commencing his ophthalmology training at the renowned Sydney Eye Hospital.
Dr Ng is actively involved in teaching and is a regular lecturer to the General Practitioner trainees at their annual training conference. He regularly provides talks to GPs and optometrists informing them of the latest breakthroughs with cataract surgery and other specialised areas. He has provided clinical expertise and coaching to junior doctors in the Northern Sydney Area Health Service.
In the past, he has been a respected reviewer for the Journal of Clinical and Experimental ophthalmology and is an examiner with the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists.
Dr Ng has a great interest in medical mission and has worked in Tanzania and in the Northern Territory with the Aboriginal population. In 2003 he travelled to Tibet where he helped set up a cataract day surgery facility and provided clinical expertise to local ophthalmologists. In 2004 and 2005 he visited Sichuan and Yunnan provinces in China to educate and provide more local ophthalmologists with the skills to help reduce the long waitlist of cataract cases. He has travelled to China three times to provide volunteer services – in 2008 to Jieyang in Guangzhou province, 2009 to Midu in Yunnan Province and 2011 to Ningcheng in Inner Mongolia
In his spare time, Dr Ng enjoys a variety of pursuits, including cooking experimenting with different styles, including sous vide. (where the food is vacuum packed and then placed in a water bath which has precisely controlled temperature). He is particularly proud of his duck confit and beef ribs.
He also cycles regularly, and enjoys geocaching(which he describes as high tech treasure hunting that leads you to interesting and often beautiful areas that one might not otherwise discover).
Dr Ng and his wife Michelle have three children, son Timothy and daughters Bethany and Aimee.
