Dr Colin Chan specialises in refractive, cataract and corneal surgery. He’s an expert in laser eye surgery, laser cataract and laser lens surgery, keratoconus and dry eye. His areas of specialty are laser vision correction, LASIK, surface ablation (ASLA, PRK), laser cataract surgery and refractive lens exchange, keratoconus, collagen crosslinking, Intracorneal rings (Intacs, Kerarings), corneal transplant, pterygium, dry eye and ocular surface disease.
Dr Chan provides his specialist services at Vision Eye Institute clinics in Bondi Junction and Chatswood.
Dr Chan graduated in Medicine and Surgery with Honours from the University of Melbourne. He was a resident and registrar in a number of medical and surgical fields at St Vincent’s Hospital in Melbourne. Dr Chan underwent ophthalmic surgical training at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital and Sydney Eye Hospital. This was followed by a Fellowship in Cornea and Refractive Surgery in Beverley Hills, Los Angeles, USA, with Brian Boxer Wachler at the Boxer Wachler Vision Institute and the University of California, Irvine.
Dr Chan is currently Director of Refractive Surgery Degree 1 at the University of Sydney, holds two university academic positions: Clinical Senior Lecturer, Central Clinical School, University of Sydney and Senior Visiting Fellow, School of Optometry, University of New South Wales (UNSW). He is also Examiner for Ocular Therapeutics diploma at UNSW.
Further career highlights include being one of the first surgeons in the world to perform collagen cross linking for keratoconus, he established the first specialised dry eye clinic in Australia, has published over 25 peer reviewed publications and textbook chapters, is an invited Chairman for the World Ophthalmology Congress in 2012 and invited to run a Masterclass in intracorneal rings for keratoconus at the Australian Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons Conference in 2010.
His awards include: Inaugural NOSA Young Investigator Award, Best Paper of Session at the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ASCRS) in 2006 and 2007, invited speaker to numerous international ophthalmology meetings including World Cornea Congress, American Academy of Ophthalmology and Asia Pacific Ophthalmology in 2011.He is also on the Editorial Board for the World Ophthalmology Times.
Dr Chan is married with two boys. His other passions are Shaolin Kung Fu, playing violin and supporting his beloved AFL team, Hawthorn.
