Crystalens HD

What it is used for?

Crystalens HD is a new intraocular lens (IOL) that has recently been introduced in Australia. It has a long track record with the original version of this lens receiving American FDA approval in November 2003.

This IOL is used to replace the natural lens in the eye of people who:

  • have cataracts and would like independence from glasses for most day to day tasks
  • have deteriorating reading vision (occurs in most people from age 45 years)

  • have to wear multifocal glasses and are not good candidates for laser eye surgery.

As we age our natural lens becomes stiffer which makes it harder for the eye’s muscles to flex and adjust the lens for near and distant vision. This new IOL replaces the older, stiffer lens and is attached to the eye’s muscles, re-establishing the eyes ability to focus at different distances.

How does it work?

Crystalens HD moves and flexes in response to eye muscle contractions – just like a natural lens. Once the lens is placed inside the eye, if a person tries to read, the middle part of the lens shifts forward slightly by changing its shape in response to the effort of trying to read.

This new IOL gives good distance vision and also offers people an improved range of vision. The Crystalens HD provides better intermediate vision - computer vision- and helps with reading as well.

Most people will be able to do the majority of day to day tasks without glasses but may still need a pair of glasses for reading small print, prolonged close work or in poor lighting.

The Procedure

The lens implant surgery is performed as a day-surgery procedure. The eye is 'numbed' for this painless surgery by using topical drops to anaesthetise the eye.

An ultrasonic probe is inserted through a small incision which is only 3mm long. The ultrasonic action gently breaks up the material that makes up the eye's natural lens, and the probe suctions the fragments out of the eye.

Then the compressed Crystalens HD lens is inserted. Once inserted, the lens slowly opens and sits centred in the eye.

Recovery is relatively fast with most people gaining good vision within a few days.

Although the procedure appears straightforward, modern lens replacement surgery requires absolute precision and sophisticated technology to achieve the high level of visual outcomes.

Am I suitable?

Your suitability for this lens will need to be fully assessed by our surgeons, taking into account your eye health, vision, lifestyle and personal needs and expectations.  Not everyone will be suitable for a Crystalens HD. If you are not suitable there may be other options which our surgeons can discuss with you.

To determine your suitability you will need to undergo a full assessment at one of our clinics where the risks and benefits will be discussed with you.  At the moment we have four surgeons who are performing Crystalens HD surgery:

•    Dr Peter Heiner        -    Gold Coast, QLD
•    Dr Darryl Gregor       -    Gold Coast, QLD
•    Dr Michael Lawless  -    Chatswood, NSW
•    Dr Patrick Versace   -    Bondi Junction, NSW
