Cataract surgery is one of the commonest operations performed in the world and is usually associated with very good outcomes. However certain cataracts are recognised to be at higher risk of complications during cataract surgery and can be classified as complex cataracts.

Surgery for complex cataracts is not straightforward and may require the use of additional surgical skills, techniques and equipment to treat effectively. Additional techniques that may be required to treat a complex cataract may include vitrectomy surgery, intravitreal injections, specialised techniques to position intraocular lenses, iris suturing, or laser treatment.
