Some people come to me expecting that LASIK is the solution for them. Certainly, they may be the right age – in their 20′s or 30′s. However, they might have a very high level of short-sightedness (myopia), or have thin corneas. This makes them unsuitable for laser eye surgery.
There is an alternative – an Implantable Contact Lens (ICL). ICLs (also known as phakic IOLs) can correct both nearsightedness and farsightedness, as well as astigmatism.
An ICL is a very thin lens, made from a collagen-based material. It’s much like a normal contact lens, but it is inserted inside your eye, where it remains permanently.
It’s so small and flexible, it can be injected into a tiny incision, then it unravels and folds into position, behind the iris and in front of the natural lens.
It takes less than 30 minutes, and recovery time is relatively short. Often, people notice that their vision has improved on the same day as surgery.
