Glaucoma is a disorder which can lead to significant visual loss if left untreated. It’s nicknamed ‘the silent thief of sight’ because that’s exactly what it does – slowly, gradually, vision deteriorates, making it difficult to diagnose until it’s well progressed. It can evn lead to blindness.
In Australia, it’s estimated that around 50% of people with glaucoma are undiagnosed. This is a shame, because you can’t get back any vision that’s lost during the process.
Glaucoma is a disease of the nerve at the back of the eye.
Because damage happens slowly, it’s virtually symptomless in the early days. So, it’s important for people who may be more likely to develop glaucoma to be vigilant. These people include those with a family history of glaucoma, diabetics, people who have had eye injuries and those who have used cortisone.
Anyone who is at risk should have their eyes checked for glaucoma regularly.
Regular eye examinations are the best way to detect glaucoma. Your optometrist or GP will perform such tests as checking the optic nerve and the the pressure of the eye.
Although there’s no cure, glaucoma can be controlled, with sight loss either slowed or prevented altogether. These treatments include using eyedrops, performing a laser procedure or, if necessary, surgery.
