I was always very active as a kid, and so playing sport just came naturally to me. As I got older, I realised I couldn’t do everything, so I concentrated on what I enjoyed most, which was watersport.
My speciality was rowing, and I ended up representing my country, South Africa, wearing the Springbok colours in international events.
Not surprisingly, I still love water-related sports, and living on the Gold Coast certainly makes it easy to indulge in all my passions, including surf skiing, waterskiing and kayaking.
I also love winter sports and really enjoy snow skiing with my family on holidays.
The medical field seems to have an irresistible attraction for the Howes family – three quarters of my family have become doctors.
I must admit to having a deep passion for what I do, and I’ve been able to publish over 20 articles, author 7 textbook chapters and I’m a regular reviewer for The Journals of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology and Graefe’s Archive of Ophthalmology.
Somehow, I still occasionally find I have some spare time and I really enjoy spending every minute of that with my wife and three children.
