Associate Professor Abi Tenen is a highly experienced and well-respected ophthalmic surgeon. She has extensive experience in the field of laser refractive surgery, including LASIK, PRK/ASLA and PTK, cataract and lens surgery, keratoconus and collagen cross-linking, implantable contact lenses, corneal inlays, pterygium surgery and auto-grafting, as well as other general areas of ophthalmology.

Currently, her practice focuses on refractive surgery and corneal conditions such as keratoconus. Due to her experience with a broad range of technologies, A/Prof Tenen is able to offer a customised care plan for each patient using a holistic approach.

A/Prof Tenen’s compassionate manner has led her to be extensively involved in various charity and teaching pursuits. These include a long-term appointment as a senior lecturer for the School of Primary Healthcare in the Faculty of Medicine at Monash University, and a teaching position for the School of Rural Medicine at Charles Sturt University. She has worked with technologies running in parallel to her ophthalmic work, including programs using neuroplasticity to improve vision.

As a pioneer in her field, A/Prof Tenen was involved in the introduction of the femtosecond laser to Australia in 2006 and she continues to stay at the forefront of ophthalmic technologies. She is involved in leading research focusing on the use of mesenchymal stem cells in regenerative medicine.

A/Prof Tenen is a frequent contributor and invited speaker at local and international conferences. She has served as a member for various specialist advisory boards in both industry and clinical practice.

Community involvement & charitable work

A/Prof Tenen has worked as a volunteer ophthalmic surgeon in the Pacific Islands with US-based organisation SEE International and in Myanmar with the Myanmar Eye Care Program. She has also spent time working with remote indigenous communities in Australia and has supported programs that target education and self-sufficiency.
