“Laser cataract surgery is the latest development in cataract surgery in several decades. Essentially, laser makes cataract surgery be a more safe and reliable procedure.” – Dr Joe Reich, Vision Eye Institute Australia.
Below: Dr Joe Reich explains laser cataract surgery and Prof Rasik Vajpayee explains the difference between laser and manual cataract surgery.
Laser cataract surgery was first performed in Australia in April 2011 by surgeons at Vision Eye Institute in Chatswood, Sydney. The advent of laser cataract surgery promises to make what is considered to be one of the safest surgical procedures even safer. Lasers were first used in medicine in 1952, enabling the treatment of previously untreatable diseases and providing precision beyond what the human hand could offer.
There are many types of lasers that have been adapted for the treatment of eye diseases, from the back (the retina) all the way to the front (cornea) of the eye. They bring precision and reproducibility, which results in more safe, accurate and comfortable surgery for the patient. Laser cataract surgery is the most recent advancement in laser technology.
Vision Eye Institute installed the first femtosecond laser cataract surgery system into Australia in 2011, one of only four USA FDA-approved systems worldwide at the time. Since then the surgeons at VEI have published extensively on laser cataract surgery in the peer-reviewed literature, presented at national and international meetings and been involved in training ophthalmologists from Australia, New Zealand and SE-Asia in laser cataract surgery.
They recently completed a prospective study of surgical outcomes and safety in 1500 cases, one of the largest reported series of laser cataract surgery performed to date in the world. There is emerging evidence of improved safety and refractive outcomes.
The cataract surgeons at Vision Eye Institute are acknowledged worldwide for their experience, research and scientific publications in laser cataract surgery. Learn more about laser cataract surgery.
